Most of the time the six year old is great entertainment. Other times, she is a good lesson for me in self-control. As in, I want to backhand her but I know that’s not appropriate.

ME: Would you get me a hair band?
6YO: I don’t know where they are.
ME: On my nightstand in the glass bowl.
6YO: It’s not my job.
ME: Ok. Never mind. (trying the reverse psychology thing).
6YO: What’s in it for me?
ME: Knowing that you helped someone.
6YO: (Standing there. Thinking).
ME: Never mind. Don’t worry about it. (more reverse psychology).
6YO: (walks away).
I guess reverse psychology doesn’t work on this one.

It’s interesting to watch how things are changing over the years. Slowly but surely we are generating less trash. Or, shall I say, we’re generating less trash that is going into the landfills.
A few weeks ago we acquired another link in our green chain. Meet Mr. Schnickerdoodle Yoko von Greenberg.

Our new guinea pig.
It all started when we finally got recycling services from our trash collection company. Our landfill trash was decreased by 50%.
Then I got one of these:

The Pro XE NatureMill composter. It uses about fifty cents of power a month and turns all of my perishable scrap into dirt compost. I love that thing. You may have already read about my experience with it. It served to cut down even more on our landfill trash.
Then we got Schnickerdoodle. I started to get a little sad as I realized that much of my vegetable scrap wasn’t going into my composter anymore. I found it only being filled with coffee grounds and egg shells. Hardly much need for those to be composted…those could go right into the outdoor planters if I wanted to.
Those little buggers eat a lot of produce!

I recently heard a radio show on the Martha Stewart channel on Sirius radio where a cancer M.D. was talking about the importance of diet and cancer prevention. It was a real eye opener and another push to start eating more healthy with increased amounts of fruits and vegetables.
He spoke about buying organic (no pesticides used in growing) and how important it could be. However, he said one thing that was very interesting to me…if it’s a choice between eating organic or not eating the fruit or vegetable, always eat the fruit or vegetable, organic or not.
Today I came across this on the My Paper Crane blog:

The doctor also said that if you can’t buy organic, to at least know which foods are higher/lower in pesticides that are used when farming. Some fruits and vegetables, I guess, hold the pesticides more than others or are permeated more by them.
This little cheat sheet would be a big help, especially if you’re starting out trying to do better with your produce.

As you can see, there is a front and a back…ones that you should always buy organic, if you can buy any organic, and the other side is ones that are better to buy non-organic if you have to.
If you click through the link up there you can get a printable version of your own at My Paper Crane. There’s some pretty cute plushie stuff there too.
Last note, if you’re interested: The doctor promoted a HIGH fruit and vegetable diet. He didn’t advocate against meat but said that the reason that meat might be singled out in cancer causing is because it’s what a lot of people fill up on and therefore, don’t get enough fruits and vegetables in their diets.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a Monday Must Have. That’s mostly because I can’t coordinate my thoughts about the things I love to fall on a Monday.
Today’s ‘Must Have’ was brought to me by my sister recently when we were in Vegas. Bare Escentuals Buxom Lips.
Always the fashionista, she helps me the best she can when we’re together. At one point she reaches out to my face and says, “Here, put this on.” I thought great…she’s trying to get me to wear lip gloss.
Now, while I like how lip gloss looks on others, I hate how goopy it feels on my lips. But this stuff was different. It didn’t feel goopy and it tingled. In a good way. I was told that it will plump my lips.
I can’t believe it, but I’m addicted. As I type this I’m fighting the urge to get up and go get me some and put it on. I’m even considering getting one for right here on my desk so it will always be close at hand.
You can get it for a good price at the link above (my Amazon affiliate) or at your local Ulta store. It comes in many colors but I like this nice sheer one. Try it…you won’t be sorry and your juicy lips will thank you.
